The main features of mathematics at Albert Park Primary School are:
From Prep to Year 2 the philosophies and practices of the Early Years Numeracy Program are implemented. Teachers assess each child individually, using the Mathematics On-line Interview and use the results to cater for individual needs
- In Years 3, 5 & 6 children are grouped for number, according to ability for approximately 3 lessons a week and then move into mixed ability groups for the other 2 lessons of the week
- In Year 4, all students are taught by the class teacher
- We teach both skills and understandings of concepts
- Mental calculation and the teaching of efficient strategies is a priority
- Estimation and an awareness of a resonable answer are emphasised
- In order to solve problems efficiently, students are encouraged to find a pattern when problem solving
Mathematics is related to real life and to other areas of the curriculum
- Listening and thinking are encouraged rather than rote learning
- Using the correct mathematical language is important
- Concrete materials are used throughout the school, with concrete materials being the main tools in Prep, with more abstract thinking as students move through the school
We teach these areas of Mathematics from Prep to Grade 6:
Number
- Counting, magnitude, order, place value, decimals, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, money
Space
- Shape - 2D and 3D shapes, transformation, symmetry, lines and edges, congruence
- Location and mapping
Measurement, Chance and Data
- Informal, formal and standard measurement, estimation
- Length, mass, time, temperature, volume, capacity, weight and angles
- Use of formulas to evaluate measures
- Predicting outcomes, using the language of chance and likelihood
Structure
Working Mathematically
- Developing a sense of mathematical inquiry
- Posing and solving problems
- Investigation
- Calculators, testing ideas
- Use of diagrams, materials, maps
All students are monitored and assessed against the expectations of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). More information on VELS is available on the VCAA website which can be accessed via the following link: http://vels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/index.html
